Oklahoma has been a leader in evidence-based home visitation. The state was one of the earliest implementers of Nurse-Family Partnership; in Oklahoma, it’s called “Children First.”

Children First – Oklahoma’s Nurse-Family Partnership (C1) was created in 1996 as a deterrent to child maltreatment and a means to improving children’s health and well-being. Originally piloted in four counties, C1 is now delivered through the statewide county health department system. Since 1996, the program (which is administered by the Oklahoma State Department of Health) has served more than 35,000 families.

Data shows that C1 families have higher rates of full-term births and infant breastfeeding than the general Oklahoma population. Click on the fact sheets below to learn more and view other results from the C1 program.

Nurse-Family Partnership in Oklahoma

Nurse-Family Partnership is a rare Oklahoma charitable community health program that has been documented to achieve lasting significant effects through multiple, well-designed randomized, controlled trials. More than 37 years of research proves that it works. This evidence shows our clients – low-income, first-time mothers – that if they follow the program and work with their nurse, they can transform their lives and the lives of their children.
